Celebrating our steps to Global Change through the International Compost Awareness Week

Posters designed by Kevin Szell, Design Director, in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week

The Moderns is excited to share with you our celebration of International Compost Awareness Week. Soil erosion and decay have been a driving force behind the decline and fall of many past civilizations. Today, soil quality is in a greater jeopardy than ever. So that’s why where some see yesterday’s leftovers, The Moderns envision tomorrow’s healthy, nutritious food.

We believe that composting is the next important arena for innovation as it offers designers many different ways of creating global impact and solutions. By focusing on innovations in everything from small kitchen composters to large composting systems on a municipal and global level, designers will discover that composting and compostable products/materials are important innovations that provide the necessary global repairs for humanity.

We recognize that eventually composting will become as important a part of society’s daily office tasks as checking emails or taking out the garbage. Our compost, produced right here in our office from leftover coffee grounds and lunches, is created simply and easily. If Janine hasn’t already stolen it for her garden, our compost is gifted to clients and vendors as an invitation to join us in our commitment to produce healthy, nutrient rich soil.  This soil furthermore contributes to providing nutrition to everyone on this planet. Try our urban composter- it’s fabulous!

Composting doesn’t just stop at the office and when at home, our president, Janine James, (an obsessive student of composting) works with this traditional worm composter to make compost and plant food for her garden. Janine is also a fan of Will Allen, the visionary urban farmer of Milwaukee’s Growing Power. His vision for composting, urban farming, and social change for urban settings has been awarded many accolades such as the MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” and also innovation awards from the Ford Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation.

Movements start by individuals living visions daily and encouraging others to join in. We therefore encourage you to look at the options out there and start composting (if you aren’t already doing so). Let us know how composting is changing your life, and send us photographs of how you are using your compost to:

Additionally, if you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by our office (900 Broadway, Suite 202) for a complimentary bag of our branded compost.
